Hugo Guthrie MBE is a Consultant Knee and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon at St George’s Hospital, at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre and to the Defence Medical Services.
Mr Guthrie attended the University of Edinburgh and as a junior doctor in the army did regimental duty in Germany, Iraq and the UK. He completed basic surgical training based at Frimley Park Hospital and higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the St George’s rotation enhanced by time spent at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan and on the military surgical team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
In addition to this Mr Guthrie has undertaken fellowship training in elective knee surgery including under the expert guidance of Jonathan Webb at the Fortius Clinic in Bristol and London. Hugo’s expertise covers the whole continuum from acute bony, meniscal and ligamentous knee injury, through the difficult area of the “failing knee” and into established degenerative disease. His extensive trauma experience has been supplemented by fellowship training at the Major Trauma Centres in Oxford and Brighton and on appointment at St George’s Hospital he became the orthopaedic lead for Major Trauma.
Mr Guthrie’s research has resulted in multiple publications in the orthopaedic literature and the award of several prizes including a prestigious British Orthopaedic Research Society prize in 2011. In 2005 he was honoured with an MBE for meritorious service in Iraq. He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), the Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS) and the Combined Services Orthopaedic Society (CSOS) where he has served as Secretary and is currently Treasurer.
