Introducing Robotic Assisted Knee Replacements

Robotic assisted surgery is an advancement in the way orthopaedic surgeons perform partial and total knee replacement. Every procedure has an individualised plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy. The system works in conjunction with the surgeon’s skilled hands to achieve precise positioning of components during surgery. This level of accuracy can help improve the function, feel and potential longevity of the knee implant.

Questions to as your surgeon

There are many things to consider when you talk to a surgeon about your knee procedure. Below are some of the questions you might want to ask at your initial appointment.

  • Is my knee pain caused by osteoarthritis?
  • Am I candidate for a partial or total knee replacement?
  • Is robotics-assisted technology right for me?
  • How does my age, lifestyle and overall health affect my treatment options?
  • What are the risks associated with surgery?

What causes knee pain?

Osteoarthritis occurs when there is a breakdown in the cushioning cartilage between joints, such as the knee. When this cartilage wears down, bones begin to rub against each other causing pain, swelling, stiffness and damage to other parts of the knee.

How does it work?

The system provides robotic assistance through an advanced computer program that relays precise information about your knee to a robotics-assisted hand piece used by the surgeon during the procedure. By collecting patient-specific information, boundaries are established for the robotics-assisted hand piece so the surgeon can balance your joint and position components with accuracy and precision.
