We’re delighted to welcome Mary Richardson as our new Director of SWLEOC. Mary started her career in the NHS at St Vincent’s Orthopaedic Hospital where she trained as an orthopaedic nurse and learnt how to deliver excellent patient care from the best Irish sisters of charity. Following her 18 months of training there, she carried on her training as a registered nurse at the St Albans and Queen Elizabeth II hospitals in Hertfordshire. Mary tells me that she had an amazing time there and learnt everything she needed to know to take up the gauntlet as a registered nurse. After a nine month stint in A&E she trained for a year at West Hill Hospital in Kent to become a fully qualified Accident and Emergency nurse.
Mary then moved on to Ealing and climbed the ranks relatively quickly to become a senior A&E sister where she developed a reputation for teaching nurses and doctors to suture. She tells me that many a pig’s trotter was carved up in the interests of learning! She also says that this was, undoubtedly, the most exciting and fulfilling role as she had the privilege of leading amazing teams and supporting and caring for patients and relatives at their most vulnerable times.
From there she became the Lead Nurse for Emergency Care at West Hertfordshire NHS Trust, working across four sites. By the time she left four years later she was the Divisional Manager for Surgery, Anaesthetics and Cancer, delivering a financially viable business which is now in surplus and providing amazing patient services. Quite a series of promotions!
Mary said that she is delighted to be at Epsom and have the opportunity to work with clinicians and managers to take SWLEOC forward. She says that she could not resist the opportunity to work in an area where the patient service is fantastic. On her first day tour the doors of theatre opened up with a nurse greeting a patient… and Mary thought she was in heaven!
