I’m delighted to welcome Mr Philip Mitchell to his new role as Medical Director of SWLEOC. Philip started as a Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon at St George's Hospital in 2002 and has been involved with SWLEOC from the outset – he actually performed the first operation in the Centre (a knee replacement), when it opened!
As a Consultant, Philip has been lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics at St George's, Director of Surgery at SWLEOC, an elected member of the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association for the last three years, clinical lead for the Patient Liaison Group of the British Orthopaedic Association and is a Trustee on the board of the Arthritis and Musculo-skeletal Alliance (ARMA).
Philip also serves on the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel, (ODEP) and Beyond Compliance panels, which are both national committees monitoring the performance of hip and knee implants across the UK. His special interests in joint replacement surgery are infection (both preventing and treating) and revision surgery associated with major bone loss. He is regularly on the faculty of major national and international hip and knee meetings and instructional courses.
Philip informs me that he is proud to be the first Medical Director of SWLEOC able to spend most of his NHS time here, thus is hoping to make a big contribution towards clinical management of the Centre. He will work closely with the outgoing Medical Director Mr David Ward and with the Heads of Nursing, Quality, Anaesthetics and PACU.
He is married to Angie, who is a former nurse and now a personal trainer. They have two children, (Ben and Izzy) who both attend Epsom College and he and his family live locally in Banstead. His main passions are water-skiing, walking and red wine!
